Supercooled melting in multicomponent Zr–Al–Cu–Ni diffusion couples

چکیده
Diffusion couples combining a hcp Zr90Al10 supersaturated solid solution with a fcc Cu64Ni36 solid solution were annealed at 410 °C for different times. The reaction at the interface was investigated by transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The investigations show the formation of a noncrystalline layer at the interface between the two solid solutions that grows to a maximum thickness of more than 0.3 mm. Concentration profiles reveal that two noncrystalline phases coexist in the diffusion couple. One is Ni-rich and was in the amorphous state during the reaction at 410 °C. The other phase is Zr-rich and grew in its supercooled liquid state. This novel supercooled melting process has not been previously observed in a solid state reaction. Kinetic and thermodynamic aspects that contribute to the high thermal stability of the Zr–Al–Ni– Cu in the supercooled liquid are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S0003-6951~96!00821-2#

AFRL-AFOSR-JP-TR-2017-0027 A Fundamental Approach to Developing Aluminium-based Bulk Amorphous Alloys based on Stable Liquid-Metal Structures and Electronic Equilibrium - 154041
Many new Al-based amorphous alloys were found within the numerous alloy systems studied in this project, and these were found specifically in compositional regions predicted by our amorphous alloy structural model. However, the critical casting dimensions of these alloys were still considered as sub-millimetre, and hence could not producible as ‘bulk’ specimens of substantial size for practical...
متن کاملLarge supercooled liquid region and phase separation in the Zr–Ti–Ni–Cu–Be bulk metallic glasses
Results of calorimetric, differential thermal analysis, and structural measurements are presented for a series of bulk metallic glass forming compositions in the Zr–Ti–Cu–Ni–Be alloy system. The calorimetric data for five alloys, prepared along the tie line between phase separating and nonphase separating compositions, show that the transition from phase separating to nonphase separating behavi...
متن کاملA Series of Zr-Based Bulk Metallic Glasses with Room Temperature Plasticity
A group of plastic Zr-Al-Ni-Cu bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) with low Zr content was developed and their thermal and mechanical properties were investigated. The results show that these Zr-based BMGs have a single crystallization event for all heating rates in the studied temperature region. The glass transition temperature Tg decreases with increasing Zr content for all heating rates. There are...

Be diffusivity data in the bulk metallic glass forming alloys Zr4i.2Ti13.sCu125Ni10Be22.s and Zr46.7Tis.3Cu75Ni10Bez7.s are reported for temperatures between 530K and 710K, extending up to SOK into the supercooled liquid states of the alloys. At the glass transition temperature, T g' a change in temperature dependence of the data is observed in both alloys, and above T g the diffusivity increas...
متن کاملNew Zr-based Glass-Forming Alloys Containing Gd and Sm
The effect of minor additions of Gd and Sm on the glass-forming ability (GFA) of Cu-Zr-Al alloys is investigated here. The rationale for these additions is the fact that the atomic size distribution can increase GFA by changing the topology of the alloy as a function of cluster stability, which is tied to the electronegativity and ionic and covalent nature of alloys. Ingots with nominal composi...
